What are biodynamics?

Biodynamic techniques are targeted positional movements used by midwives, doctors, and other birth workers to help babies move through the pelvis or birth canal more easily. You might also hear them referred to as Biomechanics for Birth® or Spinning Babies®.

These techniques are often used when babies are misaligned or labour has stalled in some way. They are intended to alter the bony dimensions of the pelvis and/or relax the pelvic muscles and ligaments, creating more space to optimise the baby's passage.

What can biodynamics look like?

These techniques are often referred to with different names so it can be hard to work out which ones you have experienced or used.

We've summarised some of the techniques used below.
